Trompe L'oeil

So this Wednesday the crew from LSAD graphics came to join us. Our brief was to create a visual trick of the eye, a Trompe L'oeil. We weren't given much instruction on the task, just to use tape and chalk, or any other medium to create an image or forced perspective on one or multiple surfaces, like an optical illusion.

The best way to explain this is with OK GO's music video.

Sometimes I wonder what this course is, am I studying for a Bachelors in Science or am I training to become a free lance artist? Days like these I can't tell. I guess the world of design has become very broad in terms of the definition of designer. We have dipped into so many disciplines in this course, in the last few weeks alone we have done manufacturing production design, advertising, graphics, photography, webdesign, and SolidWorks alone could be a separate course with the amount of work done. In an ideal world it would be great that we get a taste of everything to help us find our talents and strengths and to help us decide what path we could take in the future, but it is not an ideal world and a taste of everything just isn't enough. It doesn't stand to have little knowledge on such vast areas of design. Furthermore, from what I have experienced from the design world does not require an in-depth understanding of engineering maths and statistics, nor the chemical make up of a material. Product design seems to be more about art and contemporary styles moulded into function and ergonomics. How can studying maths be more important than studying UX design in this career path? Certainly in terms of production and There is so much emphasis on the irrelevant information and not enough on the things that matter.
